Deeply rooted in Japanese cultural history is the moon, symbol of the fleetingness of life, of enlightenment. At the end of the 19th century, the Japanese artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi was inspired by the popularity of the celestial body and created the series of woodblock prints “100 Views of the Moon”. Historical figures, mythical beings and scenes from classical Japanese theatre are among the themes of the prints, in which the moon always plays a central role.
In addition to the Japanese colour woodblock prints, the exhibition also includes other objects such as small carved figures and metal and lacquer works, all of which relate to Japanese lunar culture.
