Already in the lifetime of Hokusai (1760-1849) the Dutch brought his colour woodcuts and paintings to Europe. At the end of the 19th century he and other Japanese contemporaries became famous in the artists’ circles in Paris. The woodcuts were collected by Degas, Gaugin, Jawlensky, Klimt, Marc, Macke, Manet and many others and influenced their works of art.

Hokusai had an important part in the development of the colour woodcut, which had been practiced since the 1740s. The woodcuts were made with up to 70 colour plates, which sometimes needed the work of several artists. The illustrated books enjoyed great popularity and achieved high print-runs.

The Martin-Gropius-Bau now gives a retrospective on Hukasai’s arts and shows quiet a few of his works for the first time in Europe.
