Wax over Plaster Casts

He is considered a pioneer of modern sculpture, an important representative of impressionist sculpture, the Italian sculptor Medardo Rosso. In the 19th/20th century, he modelled with wax over plaster casts and thus captured light effects and moments of movement in his fragile sculptures. Because of the light materials, the strong light-dark contrasts in his works and the surface that seems to vibrate due to fissures, he was called “Sculptor of Light”.
The exhibition explores how characteristics of Impressionist painting such as light, colour, movement and fleetingness manifested themselves in sculpture. In addition to Medardo Rosso, the focus is on four other artists: Edgar Degas, Auguste Rodin, Paolo Troubetzkoy and Rembrandt Bugatti.
